How can we believe that Jesus has the power to help and heal us?
It is one thing to know with our heads that Jesus has the power to help and to heal. It is another thing to really believe it and to trust that He will do it. The Bible teaches us that we should ask Jesus for what we need and to have faith that He will hear and answer our prayers. In Matthew 7:7, we read that Jesus said, "Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for." And in 1 Peter 2:24, Peter tells us that Jesus "personally carried our sins in his body on the cross, so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed."
Andrew brought his brother, Simon, to meet Jesus. They both followed Jesus and Simon became Peter (which means "the rock"), a leader in the early church. The four friends brought the paralyzed man to Jesus, and his healing amazed the people who praised God. Jesus invites everyone to come to Him: "Come to me, all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Jesus also offers healing, forgiveness, and eternal life. What good reasons to help bring others to Jesus!
Jesus, the Son of God, is all-powerful. He wants you not to be afraid but to have faith. In John 14:1, Jesus says, "Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me." King David, who faced many troubles, wrote, "But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?" (Psalm 56:3-4). No matter what you are facing, Jesus promises to be with you always. Put your trust in Him and let His peace calm you like He calmed the wind and the waves.
The miracles that Jesus performed show us that He is all-powerful. He has the power over both the physical world and the spiritual world. Jesus came to earth to reveal God to us. He showed us that the way back to God and to eternal life is through realizing we are sinners, confessing our sin, and believing that Jesus died on the cross for us. This is the Gospel or Good News. Like the demon-possessed man whom Jesus healed, you, too, can go and tell others "the great things Jesus has done" in your life.
In James 2:17, we read that, "[F]aith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless." You need to not only hear and believe God's Word, but you need to live out God's Word and show the fruit of the Spirit in your daily life. By showing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control and doing good works, you will be letting "your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father" (Matthew 5:16).
